Second Life Hair - More Important than Shoes!  by Hottie Something

Hair is the Second Life equivalent to shoes in RL for a woman I think. They are oh so collectable and you can have one for any occasion. Finding a few good hair stores is a must for any female AV in Second Life and not easy for any male AV. As usual male selection at hair stores is slim to none and those that are there are often very limited and lacking in variation. To top it off not many hair designers have that knack of capturing the essence of the male hair do. Some in an effort to put out a large volume for selection put out creations that perhaps should have been swept away with the clippings on the salon floor. Most men probably don’t need too many different styles but it can be really amusing for the casual hair-observing bystander to see half the men in SL wandering around with the same hair from the latest popular hair place.

I have certain things I look for in a good hair place. As in any store a wide selection and variety is a must. But specific to hair stores the hair they sell must be copy/mod. The demos are never mod but the one you pay money for better be mod or you won’t be able to edit it to fit your head! I also like a well organized store. One that has sections and a floor plan—even better: a TP system! I also like to see a large discount and freebie section in a store. The more freebies they have to give the more hair they have to sell—the more you have to buy! A new arrival section is good too. A store with new product coming out regularly is a store you can shop at again and again!

Lag was a problem in most of the really big and popular stores. When there are a lot of textures to rez and a lot of people trying on large numbers of prims you tend to get more lag. Some places are really wonderful but if you have a slower machine the lag can really put a damper on your shopping fun.

Prices for the regular priced do’s at the stores I visited seemed to be pretty tight. They ranged from just under 200L to a little over 200L for the small 4-6 packs of color and from several hundred under 1000L to several hundred over 1000L for the mutlipacks with all the hair colors. This did not include the discount and freebie selections. Those were a little more varied. Anything from 1L to 5L for "freebies" and prices of 99L or 199L for packs of discount hair and so on.
