Review: It surprises me that so few people I speak to
have heard of the College of Scripting, Music and Science. It really is a superb venue offering easy to understand tutorials to help you to
get to grips with scripting basics. The scripting tutorials only make up one
part of this venue’s educational offerings, with building tutorials available as well.
Landing at the teleport point outside the front entrance of the building, a blue
dialog box pops up onto your screen to invite you to a group whereby you can be informed of beginners and other scripting classes if you prefer
this means of learning to self tuition. Along the front here there are items for sale including an anti-griefer HUD and one or two other
gadgets. There is also a sales section inside where you can buy certain scripts and gadgets.
The focus of this place is on the tutorials and education. The building
itself is on 8 levels, with each level clearly marked with what it offers. Levels 1, 2 and 3 deal with beginners, intermediate and advanced
scripting respectively, while level four offers ‘Video Game Functions’ and five through to eight offer more detailed information on other
functions, creating HUDs etc. The clear organisation of the building makes it simple to navigate to exactly where you want to
go!
The tutorials themselves were what really impressed me though. Laid out on
generous sized prims with screen shots and plenty of annotation, they go through the scripting process in clear detail, right from how to even
create a new script to start with! They clearly define all the terminology you’ll encounter when learning scripting and work in such a way
that you can easily go there and leave and just return when you want to carry on!
Of all the methods of learning scripting I have come across, this rates highest
for me! I would recommend anyone wishing to learn tries it out! (Best of all, it’s free)!
Conclusion: The best way in Second Life to learn
scripting!
